i was recently talking to my buddy eric mchenry (rad artist you can find here at ttusk.tumblr.com ) about this idea he had… matchbook zines. he’s a smart man. so here i am sharing the process…

How to make a matchbook zine:

Materials:

Paper, pencils/pens/computer/quill&blood, matchbooks, scissors/paper-cutter, stapler.

Step 1 - i guess the most important thing here is figuring out if you wanna go full DIY and make the covers, but this time i’m gonna stick with the freer version. so i collected a bunch of similar sized matchbooks from local dives and eateries in my neighborhood.

I found this to be a common size (1.5”x2”), thus it provides variety in your look and possible redistribution.

Step 2 - before you get all willy-nilly with drawing, it may help to mock up a bunch of blank pages to see what you’re getting yourself into. in this case i decided that a 28 pager would be good enough given the thickness of the book, the strength of the staple and function of the layout. this would be a poor format for a movie script or dissertation in quantum mechanics (but maybe it’s perfect for quantum mechanics as well).

here’s what i did, 7 pieces of 1.5” x 3.5” paper then folded them in half to get my desired number of pages (front and back).

(this layout restricted the actual image size to 1” tall x 1.5” wide due to the deep cover and staple)

Step 3 - pageantry and layouts are somewhat of a frustrating task. I found a piece of paper can make two of these zines with one alteration. there are many other ways to do this…

(here 1F and 1B represent the front and back of page 1. and so on for pages 6 through 7. you should note that 6F and 7F switch with 6B and 7B so double sided printing will work)

Step 4 - get copies made. i went with the standard household printer, just flipped the stack after the first side printed, then followed through with the other side. i suggest making a test print no matter what method you use, photocopiers make this cheap and fast. b/w copies are anywhere from 5 cents to 20 cents depending on where you go, so you can make 10 zines like this for a dollar if you pick up matchbooks for free and disregard labor and staple costs.

Step 5 - chopping. I have made a few zines from cutting up a single piece of paper and i must recommend paying the 15$ for a paper cutter. scissors will make your hand hurt and are less accurate (if you’re like me). you can also cut paper at most copy places, so if you pay for copies, hang out for a few minutes and chop away.

(take your double sided print and measure out your margins. here i had to cut 1/4 in off the top, bottom and left then 3/4 off of the right. 1/4” is the standard bleed cutoff unless you have full-bleed capabilites.)

(after that, I cut the pages into rows first. this paper cutter doesn’t like to cut thin paper very long, so i try to make the shortest cuts possible. it’s the XACTO brand. it’s reliable)

(the final cuts were cutting the rows up into the final page dimension. again, these are 1.5” x 3.5”.)

cut away and keep the stacks in order so you don’t get confused.

Step 6 - assembling the lot. here is a photo of the parts that go into the stapling process. if you close your eye and imagine a stapler in action you will get the full experience, as i forgot to show that exact step. whoops!

(feel free to shamelessly promote in the matchbook cover. i debated on flipping them so that i could design the outsides, but at the end i went with making an unassuming zine)

Step 7 - enjoy and distribute… i’m making these to put them back in the fishbowls and trays where i found them. if i can get away with doing it unnoticed, i consider it a job well done. i’ll also start leaving these around the city wherever i go hoping to surprise anyone who was looking for matches.
